LECTURER, INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMES DEPARTMENT, PEMBROKE COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE
"GREAT STORY, SHAME ABOUT THE LANGUAGE..."
SHAKESPEARE GENRE ADAPTATIONS ON SCREEN
What happens when film-makers retain Shakespeare's storylines and characters, but discard his language, adapting Macbeth as a gangster thriller, or the Shrew as a high school romp set in Seattle? Do his tragedies and comedies provide the DNA of mainstream cinema, from war movies to rom-coms? Using a wide range of film clips, Daniel Rosenthal, author of 100 Shakespeare films and Shakespeare on Screen, explores genre adaptations from Britain, Indian, Madagascar and the USA.
Mr Rosenthal has lectured on Shakespeare and film at the National Theatre, RSC, Shakespeare's Globe and for the International Programmes department of Pembroke College, Cambridge.
